E9: “And So It Goes” – Gary Carter steel solo, Pt. 1
This is a rough draft of the first section of Gary Carter’s masterful solo piece “And So It Goes.” Music notation is provided for the melody line but the timing is only approximate - refer to the YouTube for guidance.
Speaking of YouTube, you may notice that certain passages don’t sync up with Gary, fretwise and stringwise. I couldn’t begin to guess at his copedent (though he did indicate he lowers the 10th string to a G# for this song) so I let my ears find something close to what he’s playing.
And speaking of copedents: I always assumed Gary did this one on a 12-string Universal. Nuh-uh. Ricky Davis pointed out that Gary was using an E9 neck but with a lowered 10th string HERE. I think the song might be easier to tab in C6 but … this is an example of Gary’s magic and mastery of the E9 pedal steel.

Gary Carter's Copedent
Gary Carter's Copedent. He might have altered his 10th string Vertical to a low G# for this song. Maybe he will comment here ?

Hi Kerry -
Thanks for chiming in. I did email Gary a couple of questions and asked if I could quote his reply but I never heard back so … I’ll paraphrase:
He used “Live Steel Strings” with the following gauges:
.012 .015 .011 .014 .018 .022 .026w .030w. .034w .038
He did tune his 10th string down to G# only for this song.
