Tony Rice

I had a front row seat the day Tony Rice was inducted into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. His performance (with brother Wyatt) was amazing.

Real good article on Tony in this month’s Acoustic Guitar Magazine, written by Molly Tuttle.
“Requiem for a bluegrass giant”. She interviews Bela Fleck, Richard Hoover, David Grisham, Chris Eldridge, and Bryn Davies on their memories and such. It’s worth picking up a copy at your local music store..
A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first.

I treasure this picture I had taken with Tony years ago at Graves Mountain. Like many of you, this has been a gut punch to me. Tony is without a doubt my favorite of all time. My musical palette runs the gamut and it has been a slow realization over the last few months that without TR my musical foundation crumbles. He's the cornerstone. I would likely have stumbled on to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans eventually; but thanks to Tony I discovered them much quicker in my musical journey. I remember the dumbstruck awe I had when first listening to Manazanita; and I still get goosebumps listening to the perfection that is Church Street Blues. Urge For Going goes down as one of my favorite interpretations of a song that I've ever heard... and I could go on. RIP Tony, you will be missed. Condolences to his family and fans.
